BC Sports Hall of Fame to Celebrate Defining Moments at Annual Summit
September 25, 2019The BC Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate three of the biggest Defining Moments in British Columbia sport history at its Annual Summit this Friday, September 27th and Saturday, September 28th – the 1980 Marathon of Hope, 1982 CAnucks Towel Power and Vancouver 2010.
The Defining Moments to be honoured are: Terry Fox and the 1980 Marathon of Hope, the 1982 Vancouver Canucks and Towel Power and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. They will be the subject of the Defining Moments Luncheon powered by Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, Friday, Sept. 27th at the Inn at the Quay in New Westminster, beginning at 12 noon.
“The Marathon of Hope is not only a compelling event in British Columbia sport history, it has become an iconic and essential part of Canadiana,” said Tom Mayenknecht, Chair of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. “Along with the towel power of the Vancouver Canucks’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in 1982 and the transformational Vancouver 2010 Games, the inspiration surrounding Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope is worth revisiting. As story-tellers committed to celebrating the athletes, coaches, builders, teams and pioneers who have become parts of the fabric of our culture and heritage, we’re thrilled to have the chance to recall these three Defining Moments and the memories they created for us.”
“All six of these special achievements in BC sport history are celebrated in the Defining Moments gallery at the BC Sports Hall of Fame,” said Nicholas Cartmell, Chief Executive of the Sports Hall. “The special recognition of Defining Moments in BC sports history is something we aim to do each and every year in the fall in association with our Annual Summit. It’s our way of keeping these Defining Moments alive for perpetuity.”
Darrell Fox, the younger brother to Terry Fox, will be joined at the Defining Moments Luncheon this Friday by members of the 1982 Canucks – including former team captain Stan Smyl – and representatives of Vancouver 2010; a Winter Olympics and Paralympics that not only transformed this province’s place on the global sports stage, it reshaped the way Canadians celebrate international sport achievement.
