BC Sports Hall of Fame to Celebrate Three Major Defining Moments in Kelowna

VANCOUVER (Wednesday, August 24, 2022) – The BC Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate three of the biggest Defining Moments in British Columbia sport history at its Annual Summit to be held September 23rd-24th in Kelowna.

The Defining Moments to be honoured, are: Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion World Tour (1987), Nancy Greene’s Olympic gold and silver medals at Grenoble (1968) and Canada’s upset win at the 16-country Alfred Dunhill Cup Team Golf Championship (1994). Canada’s first and only Dunhill Cup was won by Dave Barr of Richmond, B.C., Ray Stewart of Abbotsford, B.C. and Rick Gibson of Victoria, B.C.

The three milestones will be the subject of the Defining Moments Luncheon powered by Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, Friday, Sept. 23rd, at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in downtown Kelowna during an Annual Summit hosted by the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame, beginning at 12 noon. They will also join six previous milestones heralded at Defining Moments functions at the BC Sports Hall of Fame Annual Summit in 2018 (Vancouver Canucks 1994 Stanley Cup Final run, BC Lions 1994 Grey Cup championship and the XV Commonwealth Games in Victoria), and in 2019 (Terry Fox 1980 Marathon of Hope, the 1982 Vancouver Canucks and Towel Power born during their Stanley Cup Final run that year, and the transformational Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games).

“As storytellers committed to celebrating the athletes, coaches, builders, teams and pioneers who have become parts of the fabric of our culture and heritage, we’re thrilled to have the chance to recall these three Defining Moments and the memories they created for us,” said Tom Mayenknecht, Chair of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. “We’re proud to have the chance to celebrate these accomplishments by Rick Hansen, Nancy Greene, Dave Barr, Ray Stewart, and Rick Gibson. It’s another way for us to honour the past and inspire the future.”

Two of the three special milestones to be celebrated at Kelowna 2022 and eight of the nine honoured to date at previous Annual Summits are part of the Defining Moments gallery at the BC Sports Hall of Fame at BC Place in Vancouver. Hansen (Class of 2007) and Greene (Class of 1969) are long-time Honoured Members of the BC Sports Hall of Fame while Barr, Stewart and Gibson are part of the team category (Class of 1999). Barr is also an individual BC Sports Hall of Famer (Class of 2016).

“After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re very pleased to resume the special recognition of Defining Moments in BC sports history; something we aim to do each fall, in association with the BC Sports Hall of Fame Annual Summit,” said Nicholas Cartmell, Chief Executive of the Sports Hall. “It’s our way of keeping these Defining Moments alive for generations to come.”  The Defining Moments Luncheon powered by Canadian Sport Institute Pacific is part of the special Kelowna 2022 weekend co-hosted by the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame, which will also be celebrating the top moment in Central Okanagan sport history. That moment, drawn from an original list of two dozen candidates, is being selected on the basis of public and media polling to be done online in the month leading to the Annual Summit and the Defining Moments Luncheon.
